8 things I want you to know about Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga is very different to other more popular styles of Yoga, such as Vinyasa, Iyengar and Ashtanaga. For those who haven’t experienced the power of this sacred practice, it can seem mysterious and intimidating. Read below for my top 8 things that I want you to know about this practice that I love so dearly.

1. You don’t have to wear white.

Although Kundalini devotees often wear white clothes and head wraps, don't feel obligated to adopt this style of dress when you take a class. Kundalini Yoga is for everyone and can be practiced in whatever clothes you feel comfortable in!

2. Chanting is not the same as singing.

Mantra is the science of using sound currents to tune and control mental vibrations, and next to pranayama, is the most important aspect of Kundalini Yoga.

3. Don’t expect sun salutations and headstands.

Kundalini Yoga is a traditional style of yoga from India but is very different to Hatha Yoga, which is the most commonly known style of yoga in the West. It is a deeply spiritual style of yoga where will have your eyes closed most of the class and combine a breath, movement, and mantra together to make the whole practice a meditation.

4. It is designed for the modern day person.

Kundalini Yoga is a yoga for householders, for people who have to cope with the daily challenges and stresses of holding jobs, raising families, and managing businesses. It is a path for everyone who would like to develop the skills to cope successfully with the challenges of day to day life.

5. Kundalini Yoga is not a religion or a cult.

Anybody can practice Kundalini Yoga and when we apply the technology of Kundalini Yoga to our bodies and minds it uplifts the spirit to cope with the challenges of life with grace. Kundalini Yoga has incredible power to balance your energy, build your resilience, and develop your intuition.

6. It is an ancient technology.

Kundalini Yoga is a precise technology that consciously combines breath, mudras, eye-focus, mantra, body locks, and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, and purify the blood. It brings balance to the body, mind, and soul by bringing awareness to the energy flow through the body.

7. The Kundalini Yoga practice will challenge you physically, but mostly mentally.

Physically the practice of Kundalini Yoga will challenge and strengthen the nervous system, purify the blood, and stimulate the endocrine system to balance hormones.  Mentally it will test your limitations of the ego, declutter your mind, and connect to your true potential.
